Permanent residence in Malaysia
Malaysian permanent residence is difficult, discretionary and slow. There is no points system and no published timeline. MM2H does not lead to it — that route was removed. The paths that do exist are narrow, and it's worth knowing which before you plan around it.
The routes that genuinely exist
- Marriage to a Malaysian citizen. The most realistic route, typically after a sustained period on the Long-Term Social Visit Pass.
- Long-term skilled employment. Extended residence on an Employment Pass and then the Residence Pass-Talent can build a case, though the RP-T is a ten-year pass rather than PR itself.
- Investment and expert categories. Narrow, discretionary, and generally requiring substantial sustained investment or exceptional expertise.
What MM2H holders need to know
MM2H no longer leads to permanent residence
The PR pathway that once sat at the top tier was removed and replaced with a twenty-year permit. Anyone joining under current rules is explicitly ineligible for PR on any tier, including Platinum. If an agent presents MM2H as a step towards a Malaysian passport, that is wrong, and it's a reason to question what else they've told you.
Set your expectations properly
Malaysia is not a country that hands out permanent residence readily. Applications can take years and refusal without a stated reason is common. Plan on the basis of long renewable passes — the ten-year Residence Pass or a twenty-year Premium Visa — rather than assuming PR arrives later.
