The student pass covers studying at a Malaysian institution. A guardian pass lets a parent accompany a young student. Families sometimes use this as a way in — it works, but the limitations matter.
The student pass
- Sponsored by the institution, applied for through EMGS for most private institutions.
- Valid for the duration of the course.
- Limited part-time work may be permitted during breaks, subject to conditions.

The guardian pass
A parent of a young student can apply to accompany them. This is the part families ask about, because it effectively lets one parent stay in Malaysia while a child studies here.
Being honest about using it as a residence route
It works, but it's fragile
The pass exists for education, and it lasts exactly as long as the education does. When the course ends, so does the pass. It doesn't build towards permanent residence, it doesn't grant work rights to the guardian, and it puts your family's right to be in the country inside a school enrolment.
If the underlying goal is living in Malaysia as a family, price MM2H Silver or Sarawak S-MM2H properly first. International school fees are the dominant cost for families either way — roughly RM 30,000 to 120,000 a year per child — and that doesn't change based on which visa you hold.
What it does suit
Families genuinely coming for education, particularly those testing whether Malaysia works for them before committing capital to a ten-year property purchase. As a trial year it's a reasonable option.
